THE PREMISE.

The Beaconhill Lighthouse stands as a landmark amidst the rugged terrain of Western Thanalan, its imposing presence casting a watchful gaze over the land. Yet, beyond its facade as a guiding light for wayward sailors, lies a realm shrouded in mystery—the headquarters of Danse Macabre.Rising majestically from the earth, the lighthouse commands attention with its towering structure, stretching high into the sky, seemingly touching the heavens themselves. From the surface, it presents an imposing sight, boasting fourteen floors that pierce the skyline with stoic resolve. Yet, it is the uppermost reaches of the lighthouse that hold most secrets untold, its summit veiled in an aura of exclusivity, inaccessible to both employees and parlor guests alike.For those who seek solace within the halls of Danse Macabre, the journey begins at the base of the lighthouse, where a solemn procession of mourners oft gather. Guided by the gentle glow of lanterns, they ascend the spiraling staircase that winds its way through the heart of the structure, each step a call to the passage of time and the inevitability of fate.As visitors ascend the floors of the lighthouse, they are enveloped by an atmosphere of quiet reverence, punctuated only by the soft murmur of whispered conversations and the occasional mournful strain of music. Each floor serves as a sanctuary of remembrance, adorned with ornate furnishings and exquisite artwork that pay homage to lives now passed.Though the secrets of the Beaconhill Lighthouse may remain veiled in obscurity, within its hallowed halls, the journey from life to death is honored with grace and dignity, each soul guided by the gentle glow of the eternal flame that flickers at the heart of the lighthouse's tower.

THE HISTORY.

The black market organization known as the Dark Veil was established by Angelus Desdemona when he was just eighteen summers old. He founded it out of necessity, as his family's Funeral Parlor was in danger of being lost due to a shortage of gil and business. Determined to preserve what remained of his family's legacy, Angelus delved into the Black Market.Initially, the Dark Veil focused on the grim task of removing and disposing of corpses, without questioning the motives of those who requested their services. Over time, the business began to expand and adapt to the changing market demands. They transitioned from corpse handling to transportation, then to drug manufacturing. Eventually, the Dark Veil started supplying Soul Stones, which were taken from the arms of deceased adventurers, unbeknownst to their grieving families who received replicas instead. These Soul Stones fetched a high price, exceeding Angelus' expectations, and ensured a steady income for both his Funeral Parlor and the Dark Veil. Through his personal research, Angelus also discovered that Voidsent could be temporarily sealed within stones called auracite, and released at will. When presented as product, this discovery further attracted the attention of unscrupulous individuals who were willing to pay a hefty sum for such a product, and the Dark Veil gladly catered to their demands without hesitation.Today, the Dark Veil has grown significantly in both size and scope. It offers a range of services including corpse handling, organ harvesting, smuggling of Soul stones, enthrallment and extermination of Voidsent, light-aspected studies, trafficking of drugs (such as tinctures and potions), intelligence gathering, the sale of illicit assets, and on very rare occassion, assasination. Their objective is to further disseminate their influence within the black market, uphold a substantial financial stream, and establish a degree of authority over individuals in positions of power, all while avoiding exposure to the public eye.It is imperative for a shadow to operate discreetly, emerging only when absolutely essential.

[ cis male | he/him | tba ] — father cecilion, the venerable head priest of the church of saint adama landama. from the very genesis of danse macabre, his presence has been an immutable fixture, cloaked in the sanctity of his sacred vows yet veiling desires most sinister beneath his austere facade. in the eyes of the devout and the uninitiated alike, he is the epitome of reverence and piety. his countenance exudes an aura of solemnity, his every gesture steeped in the grace of divine servitude. yet beneath this veneer of holiness lies a darkness that few dare to acknowledge — a darkness that finds its dwelling amidst the shadows cast by the lichyard near the church's grounds.

[ ? | ? | ? ] — the enigmatic shapeshifting collective entrusted with the delicate artistry that brings solace to grieving hearts. this group of individuals presenting as one, with an eye for aesthetics, oversees the beauticians and florists who weave beauty into farewell ceremonies. with an understanding that the visual and emotional elements are intertwined, they ensure that every wake is not just a departure but a poignant, curated memory. yet, in the covert realm of the dark veil, they reveal another facet of their expertise. masters of soul stone smugglings, they navigate the shadows with ease that mirrors their artistic prowess. they also oversee the production, distribution, and trade of illicit substances.it is unknown how many people carry the title of 'cocytus' at present.

[ cis male | he / him | tba ] — a lesser known half of acheron. he is both fierce and vigilant. unlike his counterpart who focuses on more important matters nearest to the dark veil's domain, this one takes care of tasks that require constant movement. utilizing his expertise as a monster hunter and wood warder, he hunts down and eliminates nuisances and potential threats to the organization. preferring solitude over socializing, he remains elusive and rarely makes an appearance unless called upon by his other half or styx.

acheron.

[ cis male | he / him | carrd ] — the other half of acheron. a wood warder. he undertakes the duty of safeguarding the deceased from the lingering grasp of curses. his responsibilities encompass the retrieval, preservation, cremation, burial, and cleansing of corpses, ensuring that the transition to the afterlife is peaceful and free from malevolent influences. in his capacity as acheron, he commands a select unit of trained killers known as slayers within the dark veil, and these same people delve into organ harvesting. with his cadre of slayers and a murder of crows at his disposal, acheron serves as the right fist and eyes of danse macabre.

lerna.

[ cis female | she / her | tba ] — the witch of danse macabre, lady lerna, ensures that the dead receive a venerable performance from her darlings. perfection is the bare minimum: every note must be played to its fullest potential, every word must be rife with meaning, and every song must bleed with emotion. life is but a stage, after all, and lady lerna demands everyone play their part. funerary performers, eulogists, composers, lyricists, and poets answer to her. they are her pawns, and their audience is death itself. impress them, bring them to tears, stir their soul with yearning to live. even the dead deserve to dance, don’t you think?

[ female | she/her | carrd ] — this small woman is the epitome of discretion; a guarded and charismatic conversationalist, she navigates the coordination of people and heavy lifting for the parlor, whether that be moving the coffins themselves, or filling them from the shadows. a tactician by nature, she wields information and power with a light touch to influence movement for danse macabre where needed.

lethe.

[ male | he/him | carrd ] — sharlayan educated and twelveswood blessed, he is a practiced and professional doctor with an understanding of aether and a precision with it that belies pure talent. what his shitty personality and attitude takes away, his expertise and knowledge makes up for.

charon.

[ ? | ? | ? ] — the ferrymen. rather harmless looking familiars, but with dubious glowing eyes. charon is the name that the overwhelming amount of crimson-eyed jet black crows within the funeral parlor go by. they check the authenticity of a ferryman’s coin with their beak and their sharp sight and senses are used to observe foes and allies alike. acheron often trades consciousness with these little crows much to danse macabre’s advantage.

sister carmilla.

[ cis female | she/her | ? ] — former lamb and was the previous acheron. she is now a woman of the cloth and worships the twelve alongside father cecilion at the church of saint adama landama. sister has not given up her charon's toll, which can only mean one thing.

nawashiro.

[ male | he/him | tba ] — known as "elysium". an engineer for the garlond ironworks, hand-selected by lethe to act as his direct assistant. with an infectious smile and a can-do attitude, elysium makes up for his lack of combat ability with an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things allagan, magitek, and mechanical in nature.

[ transmasc nonbinary | he/they | carrd] — known as "erinyes". one of few words but affirmed in his actions, calm but unnervingly so. with the burden of many winters as a mortician, neither saints nor sinners escape his judgment, beautiful and deceptive through and through. perhaps it is a reflection of himself, much like a doll on strings.

[ cis male | he/him | ? ] — right hand-man to tamamo and another one who dons the mask of cocytus. he is known to the lambs as "harpy" in disguise.

[ agender | any | ? ] — shiro is a member of cocytus. gifted by the blessing of a fox tail, he had lived a mortal life, but now is mortal no longer. with amazing prowess he can change his appearance to be whatever he wants, whatever he needs, molding himself to the task dutifully. you never know who he is, where he is, what he's doing, what he has planned. like a spider in the corner, he listens and watches, waiting and watching, laying webbed trap for the next victim to fall into.

[ male | eridanos | tba ] — a fledgeling auspice who often forgets what he is. he worked in the same environment as the dark veil as an informer and an assassin on command. extremely energetic and reckless, matching that of a certain arctic fox’s who is also likely the reason why he switched from kugane’s scene to where they are today. he’s also very food motivated.

[ female | styx | carrd ] — with starlight eyes that gleam with weariness and a dark prowess, ninoh is a figure of haunting grace. those who seek her out come to her for guidance, healing, sanctuary or trade. and for those that travel a darker path, sometimes, something more.

[ female | cocytus | carrd ] — excelling in arts and artistry, this retired dancer is akin to a flowing river carving its way through stone. born as the runt of her litter, she has grown to be a nimble prowler bright in hue. she is known to mend fabrics and wounds, but you'll never see her full hand.

[ male | eridanos | tba ] — an ever present guardian, his steady support has ensured that the lighthouse stands an immutable beacon for the guidance of souls living and dead. he was around long before the parlor's inception and he'll be there long after it's gone; a sentinel enduring the inevitable march of time.

[ cis male | eridanos | tba ] — a pirate. he is a man of unwavering loyalty and boundless ambition. having pledged his allegiance to three generations of eridanos, he is a stalwart servant of the organization. his commitment knows no bounds, sailing through the darkest waters and venturing into the most forbidden lands in pursuit of his objectives. yet, his loyalty comes with a caveat—he operates by his own rules beyond the purview of his masters, so long as his actions do not threaten the organization's interests.

[ nonbinary | styx | carrd ] — a historian first and foremost, but with a love and appreciation for any art as well. as someone who has spent nearly the last three hundred winters in the cold, stuffy city of ishgard, he's looking for a change of pace, anywhere to put the pen to use; and surely the experience into the supernatural and otherworldly, and means of dealing with both, strikes a fancy in someone's heart.

[ male | lethe* | tba ] — a humble farmer from namai with a beaming smile, wagging tail and a strong sense of duty who is testing the waters of his very first job in eorzea. as a maintenance man his desires are very simple: work, get paid, and expand his graphic novel collection.

[ nonbinary | acheron | carrd ] — the prodigal child of outlawed mages, shivali swore to never join another cult. after murdering samsara's ringleaders, shivali found themself entangled in danse macabre, who not only assisted in disposing of their prey, but promised to treat the corruption consuming their arm: in exchange for their services under house acheron.

[ femme | lerna* | tba ] — skilled musician by heritage, uyanga delights in breaking the curated silence of funeral processions with song. her command of lyre and voice is sure to quell the sorrows of any touched by her dirge. from goldbile caverns to velvety parlors, all she requires is an altar for her performance.

[ cis woman | phlegethon | tba ] — an auspice whose gaze has seen much, and mind contains more. once an innkeeper and opera singer, she is able to captivate by voice and expertly navigate the intricacies of business ownership. do not be alarmed if she stares at you longer than average: it is an old habit of hers.

[ male | acheron | tba ] — he might not seem the type to be involved in any shady dealings but there's far more than meets the eye with this miqo'te whose friendly demeanor invites you to underestimate him. to an extent a jack of all trades with a proficiency in combat, he's not afraid to get his hands dirty. tasks that would turn the stomachs of lesser men and call his morality into question are not beyond him.

[ male | styx | carrd ] — charming, generous, and smooth, lorcan seems nothing more than a simple man with base desires and depth no greater than a thimble. but looks are deceiving, and by the time lorcan strikes, it's too late to stop him, and he doesn't play for anything less than high stakes. guard your soul or dance with the devil.

[ male | eridanos | carrd ] — behold a carefree wild child and hardened rogue. rude, unapologetic, and as foul-mouthy as he is manipulative. nico'to is an adept fixer with experience as a thief, smuggler, broker, and gin-drinker. he does a bit of everything, and is damn good at it... provided the somnus is kept far away.

[ male | phlegethon* | tba ] — hailing from family of butlers to esteemed house munikiri, he was proud to be yet another servant of theirs... until he got unceremoniously fired. he went to eorzea, land of his predecessors, in search of a place to die when he stumbled upon the funeral parlor which was hiring.

[ cis male | styx | tba ] — not much is known regarding this viera, he seems warm and welcoming but something is deeply unsettling about his aether. best to keep your guard up around this one.

rhadamanthus.

[ male | phlegethon | carrd ] — loud and lively is how most would describe this viera. with a thirst for life, he can be found with a cheerful (sometimes shit-eating) grin on his face, teasing his acquaintances and getting into trouble. he’d be happy to take up whatever you're offering, from a beer-drinking challenge to a fight, he’s there for it all and will be back home in time for an afternoon nap.

scylla.

[ female | eridanos | tba ] — a willing participant in the underground, preferring undetectability and the sweet embrace of silence over her common man. beyond this, not much motivates her misgivings aside the need to survive and biding her time. for that, she makes acceptable company. and she likes to keep it that way.

sophrosyne.

[ female | acheron | docs ] — if death had a gender or human form, sophrosyne would surely fit the bill to be its counterpart. her appearance is extremely deceiving from both her nature and her heart, but she blames that on her mother's genes and excessive softness.

[ transmasc nonbinary | styx | carrd ] — outwardly cold and stoic to outsiders, they struggle to let anyone new into their heart. heavy chains from the past keep them weighed down from ever approaching the present, but there is more to them than meets the eye.

[ woman | phlegethon* | tba ] — someone has to bear the burden of being the most intelligent and rational person in the room, always the voice of reason and calm. trephelle wouldn't describe it as a “burden” when it's simply her god given talent to excel in everything before her.

[ trans masc | acheron | tba ] — his appearance belies inelegant violence — the mask a warning for would - be annoyances. this one's work is performed with a brutal precision, and second chances are seldom afforded to unfortunate targets. it is said that they rarely escape his grasp for long.
